On 12 February 2010, Fayez Ahmed Faraj, a Palestinian resident of the al-Sheikh neighbourhood in the old city of Hebron was shot multiple times by Israeli occupying soldiers and later died of his injuries after waiting to be transported to hospital. Media reports stated the man was shot after he had attempted to attack a soldier with a knife, with military sources claiming that the soldiers acted in accordance with proper protocols.1 These claims are contradicted by information collected by Al-Haq’s documentation department, which has established that:
· Fayez was unarmed;
· that soldiers opened fire on Fayez on three separate occasions; and
· that in the aftermath of the shooting, an Israeli soldier took a knife from his own pocket and threw it down beside the victim.
Following the shooting, Israeli soldiers prevented a Palestinian ambulance from transporting the victim to hospital and instead placed the victim in an Israeli military vehicle. The military vehicle was then permitted to leave the area, but the victim died within the hour.
